Screen Printing

Our inks can be printed with different textures and appearances. From the soft vintage feel found in the retail sector, to the classic “extra thick” print seen on tough work wear, our custom screen printing is just that, custom. Let us know which method you prefer.

The quintessential screen print. Besides high durability, this method provides the richest color and opacity. While quite soft, it can be felt with your hand on the fabric.

Traditional

Super closeup of faux water base ink technique results on a cream shirt. A six color screen print of hand drawn characters are being shown.

Thinner ink is able to saturate the fabric instead of laying on top. With little ink on the surface of the fabric, a softer hand feel is achieved.

A lack of opacity is the trade-off when applying this method to darker fabrics. Many use the word ‘vintage’ to describe the quality.

softer

With certain well bodied inks and specially prepared screens, we can leave an almost bullet proof deposit of ink. This technique should really be reserved for heavy fleece, twill, denim, or other more structured fabrics.

thicker

Example of dye discharge screen print on a custom shirt.

Discharge printing describes a process where an ink additive causes a chemical reaction when heated, stripping the fabric of it’s pigment. Similar to bleaching. Only the pigment from the ink remains on the shirt. The final product is as soft as the shirt itself.

A ‘puff’ additive can be used to make printed ink expand when heat is applied, giving the print a spongy quality. This process leaves the color with a faded appearence, especially when attempting to go big with the effect. Pantone color matching is nearly impossible in most cases.

Metallic inks are a great way to add a premium look when printing a single color. These inks can also add visual interest to a simple graphic, like using it for the gold in a pirates’ chest. We always keep a gold and silver ink in stock but different tints and textures can be special ordered. We don’t recommend using these inks for super fine detail like halftones or small text.
